Everton boss David Moyes believes teenager Ross Barkley is ready to play for the England Under 21s but warned that he still has a lot to learn.
The highly-rated 17-year-old is the latest product of the Everton Academy and has impressed in his two senior appearances to date, against QPR last Saturday and Sheffield United in the Carling Cup on Wednesday.
The youngster's rapid rise has caught the eye of England Under 21 boss Stuart Pearce, who named the Liverpool-born player in his squad for games against Azerbaijan and Israel at the start of next month.
Moyes feels Barkley will have no problem making the step up to international football but warned he still has a lot to learn, especially after missing much of last season with a double leg break.
"I spoke to Stuart Pearce and he is ready for the Under 21s," Moyes said.
"But the boy has not played enough games of football.
"He made a couple of mistakes in the first half with the ball - you will find there will be times when he does things and you think it's not maybe quite right.
"That is because he missed a year and has been plunged right in at the deep end."
